Steven Benish, PhD
"When you as a patient meet with me, I first help you to feel, and be, heard. We identify the causes of the suffering. This is sometimes difficult to accept, as sometimes we are contributing to our own suffering, but I am always honest with you in our work toward healing. I provide you with options for relief, working with your strengths. We develop a trust of each other. I am genuine with you. I do not pretend to care about your challenges, because I actually DO care about them. I do not give up on you. I accept you as you are, while also helping you to make change.
I have lived in Austin, Texas, Minneapolis, and Madison but was raised in a very rural area in the Midwest. I learned to be self reliant but to also help others in need. I learned that reputation is based on honesty and character. Importantly, I learned to acknowledge our mistakes and learn from them. I learned to work hard baling hay in the mow, detassling corn, and other physical labor, but I also discovered a love for learning, faith, and things deeper.
I am grateful to have chosen a profession that I love. I respect my patients and admire them for overcoming obstacles. I do my best to treat each patient with dignity and respect. I focus on my patients' strengths and their abilities to manage difficulties and to become the best person of themselves. I do not give up on my patients and together we work toward making them whole again."
