Our Mission: As Qualified, Skilled, and experienced professionals, we strive to provide our patients and their families with compassionate, comprehensive and cost effective care, while utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to enhance the experience of birth for a woman and her family.
The RAMC Birth Center is staffed by Registered Nurses with over 100 combined years of experience. Family Practice Physicians and one consulting Obstetrician serve our patients. Our annual birth rate is approximately 200. Specially trained OB technicians, LPNs or CNAs also provide the supportive care to new moms and dads and their families during their stay here.
Our experienced staff believes that events surrounding your pregnancy and birth require both emotionally and physically sound care. Our registered nurses feel privileged to care for women during this personal yet universal experience. Up to date, respectful maternity care is provided at all times.
We strongly encourage you to participate fully in planning your birth by calling us anytime with questions or concerns. You can sign up for Childbirth preparation classes, Parenting or Breastfeeding classes. We encourage you to plan a tour at any time, view some educational videos while waiting for appointments or lab tests or just inquire about any pregnancy or infant concerns by phone 24 hours a day.
Having a baby is a very personal experience. The Birth Center encourages this individuality by offering a variety of birthing options (see frequently asked questions.)
Reedsburg Area Medical Center has been bringing babies into the world for over 100 years yet some of the greatest growth and diversity in surroundings and services has occurred since the Birth Center received its renovation five (5) years ago.
On June 18, 2001, RAMC's new Birth Center opened its doors, welcoming babies in a brand new, beautiful home-like atmosphere. The Birth Center was renovated to allow for the creation of private suites for labor, delivery and post partum care. These suites are substantial in size to allow families to share in all phases of the birthing experience. Over the past five years this new environment has seen nearly 1,250 births with 2005 being a record-high of 293 deliveries.
Having an amazing setting is just one of the amenities - there's so much more. RAMC's birthing programs and patient care have earned them a reputation that draws patients from far beyond the city of Reedsburg. Water births, natural births, the use of doula support, Certified Nurse Midwives, progressive pain medications and flexible, caring staff make RAMC the facility many choose - even over their own local hospitals.
The Birth Center's staff of nurses, midwives and physicians are dedicated to making the birth experience comfortable, memorable and unique. They all have a similar philosophy with regard to the birth experience - they want to make it what the individual patient wants it to be.
Patient care begins in early pregnancy. RAMC physicians and nurses encourage patients to talk about birth plans, to attend the wide array of classes offered and to speak with the on-staff lactation consultant. As always, certified educators can be called anytime to answer questions, before and after the birth. Further, patients are welcome to come to the Birth Center any time during their pregnancy if there are questions, evaluation for pre-term labor or change in fetal movement.
Since 2003 RAMC has been one of the only area hospitals to offer water births. Patients relax in a tub of warm water as labor progresses. Immersion in water during labor and delivery decreases the pain of contractions and increases buoyancy and improves blood circulation, ultimately resulting in less pain for mother and more oxygen for baby. Water deliveries can provide a gentler entrance into the world for the baby and a fantastic bonding experience.
RAMC has always been progressive when it comes to labor and childbirth. The three certified registered nurse anesthetists are focused on providing patients safe and effective options for pain relief during labor. The latest drugs and procedures are utilized to ensure that the patient remains as pain-free as possible. Epidurals have been offered for laboring women for over eight years. Whether this type of pain relief is needed or if a non-medicated, low-intervention birthing experience is preferred the Birth Center staff is flexible to respond to a patient's changing needs.
Certified Nurse Midwives are also available for women. Having Certified Nurse Midwives is unique in that they have admission privileges to the hospital. RAMC is very progressive in that regard.
Birth Center nurses have been trained to give doula support. The most important role of the doula is to provide physical, emotional and informational support to women and their partners during labor and birth.
As always, the extra perks offered by RAMC's Birth Center remain a constant reminder of how they go the extra mile for patients and their families - the popular celebration dinner, the numerous gifts showered by RAMC and area businesses, the on-site massage therapist and the continuous support from the Mornings With Mom support group.
RAMC is about not only fulfilling but also exceeding patient expectations. Years ago women didn't have many choices, they were told what was going to happen. Now the focus is finding the best ways to honor the patient's wishes and proposing different scenarios to make certain her experience is a rich and fulfilling one.
As the Birth Center continues to grow the special TLC always stays constant during every encounter, every time. Here's to another 100 years!
