Better Balance & Mobility
Balance disorders and falls are serious health concerns impacting a large percentage of the population. Maintaining one’s balance requires that multiple body systems work in unison. Aging, disease, medication and injury can all affect these systems and can lead to imbalance, dizziness and mobility problems. Balance is a skill that most of us can keep or recapture. You can become steadier on your feet and reduce your risk of falling.
The Balance Master assessment & rehabilitation system installed at Reedsburg Area Medical Center represents the most advanced balance and mobility assessment and treatment equipment available. This same technology is used to measure equilibrium in the NASA shuttle crews pre- and post-flight.
Balance disorders and dizziness can greatly limit a person’s ability to perform day–to–day activities — from getting in and out of bed safely, to walking in their home and community.
• Each year 1/3 to 1/2 of adults aged 65 or older experience dizziness, decreased balance or falls.
• Falls are the leading cause of injury in older adults.
• Dizziness is the second most common reason patients see their doctor.
Balance Retraining
You will receive a thorough evaluation by a certified therapist using one of the most advanced balance systems, the NeuroCom Balance Master, which consists of a highly sensitive forceplate connected to a computer.
Specific tests can isolate the different senses that contribute to balance control and help identify the patient’s balance problem. The data provided by these tests aid therapists in developing the best treatment for each individual patient. Other equipment including use of video goggles will aid in your diagnosis.
The data provided by these tests aid therapists in developing the best treatment for each individual patient. After finding the cause of your balance problem, a specific treatment program will be designed to help reduce your symptoms and improve your balance.
Patients can perform various exercises on the Balance Master as part of their physical therapy. The system provides feedback on a computer screen that helps patients work to improve their balance. The interactive nature of the system motivates the patient to see how they are improving.
The equipment can help aging patients with balance problems such as dizziness, unsteadiness, and falls. The Balance Master also has specific applications to patients recovering from stroke, head injury, and orthopedic or sports injuries. These conditions can restrict freedom of movement and expose patients to increased risks for falls.
