Choosing a Car Seat

Which is the Best Car Seat?   www.wcpsa.com

No one seat is “safest” or “best.” The “best” car seat is one that fits your child, fits your vehicle, and fits your family’s needs in terms of budget, comfort, and convenience so that you’ll use it correctly on every single ride.

One of the most important things you can do when you buy a car seat is to read the instructions of both the car seat and your vehicle. Displays or illustrations of seats in stores do not always show them being used correctly. You may want to try the seat in your vehicle before you buy it because all seats are not compatible with all vehicles.

Sometimes car seats are recalled. When you buy a new seat, make sure you send the registration card to the manufacturer so you will be notified of any problems or recalls. You can check the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s recall site to see if your car seat has any recalls on it.

A car seat with a five-point harness will provide the best fit and the most protection for babies and toddlers of all shapes and sizes.

Experts recommend against buying used car seats. When seats are missing parts (including the manual), damaged, or on recall, they can be extremely hazardous to use. They may even have invisible damage from a crash. Plastic deteriorates over time and can crack under stress, leaving your child unprotected. It is recommended that seats over five years old not be used.
